Pentwyn eye league title after a cracking start to the season

PENTWYN CC have the league title in their sights, according to club secretary Mark White, who has hailed his players for their fantastic start to the season.

“If you had come to us at the start of the season and said to us that we would be third in the table heading into July there is no doubt we would have snapped your hand off,” said White.

He is keen to stress that while the side are content with where they currently sit in the Thomas Carroll Welsh Club Cricket Conference Division One, they are still pushing for the league title.

“Now we’ve got to this position we want to win the title. It would be wrong for us if we didn’t keep on pushing because we’ve shown we are more than competitive in this league.”

Last Saturday, Pentwyn proved the point in case by rebounding from defeat to Whitchurch Heath by smashing Cefn Forest away from home.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Torfaen-based side showed that they possess one of the most vaunted batting line-ups in the league in racking up 352 for nine in 45 overs.

Sam Saunders starred for the team as the opener carted the Cefn Forest bowling attack around the park to score 108, his first century of the league season.

He found useful support from Lee Jones (48), skipper John Paul Rosser (43 not out) and Gareth Haule (39). Despite Cefn’s opener Dean Butler matching Saunders’ feat, by scoring 120 not out, the home side never seemed in a position to make a strong fist of the encounter. Saunders completed a fine all-round performance by picking up figures of 2-47, while Rosser was the pick of the bowling attack with 3-32 as Cefn ended on 194 for seven to ensure that Pentwyn ended the victors by a huge 158-run margin.

On Saturday Pentwyn will travel to Tredegar, while on Sunday the club return home to face Pontymister in the quarter-final of the Sunday cup, a game which White believes will give another opportunity to those pushing for first-team honours a chance to showcase their talent.
