Blaenavon triumph in Torfaen derby
1:20pm Thursday 13th September 2012 in Sport
BLAENAVON 13 CWMBRAN 6 BLAENAVON took the spoils from a hardfought derby game which saw them lose several players to injury.
Two early penalties put Cwmbran ahead before Blaenavon lost flanker Jo Cook with an injury needing hospital treatment and then suffered another setback with a yellow card for Gareth Betts.
Lee Baker was also forced off injured before half time, while Dan Davies and Dan Phillips missed penalties.
Betts brought the hosts back into it with a second-half penalty before the visitors had a player sent off and pressure by Blaenavon resulted in a deserved try for Jamie Noble.
Victory was sealed when Scott Creese was on the end of a great move started by Gareth Groves.
At the final whistle Blaenavon deserved the win. Hopefully there will be quick recoveries for Jo Cook, Lee Baker and Andrew Trumper on the injured list. Alan Scammell is back training after an Achilles tendon injury.
