Bad luck continues for Pontypool with defeat

PONTYPOOL fell to their second loss of the season at Markham.

It’s been something of a traumatic last few months for Pontypool, who would surely have hoped for a good start to the season following a much-publicised and unsuccessful High Court skirmish with the Welsh Rugby Union. But a 41-20 away defeat at the hands of Markham-based Tata Steel on Saturday follows the 30-27 opening-day home loss to Beddau.

Centre Chris Macey and right winger Ashley Norton were responsible for Pooler’s tries and stand-off Sam Mills for kicking a couple of conversions and as many penalties.

Pooler head coach Mike Hook made no excuses for the defeat and indeed said there were positives to take from it.

“This was a similar display to the previous week, we did well before the break but switched off on the restart before enjoying a resurgence towards the end,” he said. “I firmly believe it’s a fitness matter to do with our game structure with a bit of mental attitude thrown in as well and we will look back at a video of the match and analyse all aspects.”
