GWENT COUNTY AMATEUR CUP SEVERN TUNNEL NON-POL CLUB A 6 NEWPORT EAGLES 2

SEVERN Tunnel Non-Political Club A are in the first round proper of the Gwent Amateur Cup after they beat visiting Newport & District League side Newport Eagles 6-2 at Rogiet on Saturday.

The Tunnel stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes but then took their feet off the gas and allowed the Eagles back into the game.

But two killer goals by Tunnel in the second half clipped the Eagles’ wings and the Rogiet outfit are now looking forward to their away trip to Gwent County League Division Two side RTB Ebbw Vale on November 3.

TomAtkins put the Tunnel ahead in the third minute, firing his shot low past the keeper after he latched on to a through ball frommidfield.

Three minutes later, Scott Payne hooked a cross over the Eagles keeper’s head and then defender Chris Taylor rose high to head the third from Atkins’ cross.

But the Eagles fought back and a stooping header from Tyron Smith at the far post cut the deficit and Chris Aston made it 3-2 After the break, Payne added the crucial fourth and the fight drained out of the Eagles. Atkins met a cross from the left to head powerfully home, and completed his hat-trick with a curling shot from the left of the penalty area.

In the other preliminary tie, league leaders Mathern Wanderers beat Newport & District side Oakfield Inn 12- 0, thanks to Wayne Duffield (4), Richard Wood (3), Rob Wood, Shane Murphy, James Burchill, Ieuan Diyaolu and Shane Dash.

They will host Pontymister is the first round tie on November 3.
