East Gwent Senior League - Underwood 17 Caldicot Town 2
UNDERWOOD SC served notice that they have every intention of a rapid return to the Gwent County League when they demolished Caldicot Town 17-2 on Saturday.
Poised three points behind leaders Mathern Wanderers who have a game in hand, Underwood did their goal difference a power of good and look like they have shrugged off the disappointment of back-to-back defeats at the hands of Undy Athletic and Mathern.
Manager Danny Williams was happy especially after seeing his team go 2-1 behind.
Another slow start but for the next 75 minutes, it was one-way traffic, he said.
Josh Downing scored eight, Ryan Green added 4 and the others were scored by Sean Johnson, Craig Owen, James May, Owen Ellis and Michael Donovan.
Our man of the match was Kyle Brown who didn’t score but hit a post three times. However, Underwood cannot afford to slip either as Undy are third, two points behind following their 8-1 home victory over Severn Tunnel Non Pol and they also have a game in hand.
Undy manager Ben Garner was particularly pleased because his team took their chances.
We missed a few last week but we put them away against Tunnel, he said.
We were excellent all round. Ryan Cole scored twice, including a penalty, with Simon Owen (2), Dan Jarman (2) Jack Lloyd and Andrew Watkins getting the others. The other match scheduled for Division 1, between Chepstow Athletic and Chepstow Town, was called off.
In Division 2 bottom club Seven Tunnel Non Pol B almost grabbed their first point of the season, going down 4-3 at home to Portskewett& Sudbrook.
Leaders Tintern Abbey suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-1 at home to Castle A while Sudbrook CC and Castle B drew 2-2.
The Abbey are still five points ahead of Sudbrook CC andCastle A.
Mathern Wanderers B won 4-2 at Castle C with goals by Sam Davies (2), Colin Jeffery and Dan Williams Jnr.
Manager Lee Baker was pleased the B team were back to winning ways.
It was a quality performance, really good defending and we created a lot of chances," he said.
This Saturday sees Tintern Abbey take on Severn Tunnel Non Pol B in the Benevolent Cup preliminary round while Sudbrook CC entertain Castle C in the Fishwick Cup preliminary round.
In Division 1, match of the week appears to be Blackrock Rovers v Underwood although the Chepstow Athletic v Severn Tunnel Non Pol Aclash could also be close.
Chepstow Town are home to Mathern Wanderers and CaldicotTown will want to put that 17-2 drubbing behind them when Undy Athletic visit.
In Division 2 Portskewett & Sudbrook entertain Castle Awhile Castle B host Thornwell Red & White.
The cup matches kick off at 2.15pm while the league matches still start at 2.45pm
