Pontypool Schools A 40 Islwyn Schools 5

Pontypool Schools A team the Lions welcomed Islwyn Schools to the New Panteg ground for a first encounter of the season.

The Pooler boys have a fine record against Islwyn having not lost against them for over a decade.

Islwyn started off brightly and tore into Pontypool, putting them under intense pressure.

It was only fine defence from Ben Moa, Brennan Gaite, Ben Jones and Tommy Maclean in the Pontypool pack that kept Islwyn from crossing the Pooler line.

Pontypool started to win more possession and it was after fine pressure from their pack led by captain Joseff Cowell that the cracks began to appear.

The Pooler backs were once again in fine form playing some outstanding rugby with inside half Ben Pilot causing numerous problems for Islwyn with running in open play.

Outside half Will Reed was another having a fine game with centres Lewis Hughes Evans and Morgan Spence rewarded with tries - Lewis bagging one and Morgan crossing for two.

The try of the game was scored by wing Ben Gomez who came on for the injured Ryan Lewis. He sidestepped his man ten metres from his own try line and roared up the touch line with not a hand placed on him, leaving even the away team supporters clapping.

Substitute wing Mason Spence was also not to be outdone after coming off his sick bed to run in two late tries.

The Pooler forwards were not letting the backs have it all their own way and Brennan Gait and Ben Jones also crossed for a try apiece to make the final score 40 points to 5.

This was another excellent display from all the boys and puts the Pontypool in confident mood for the rest of the season.
