PANTEG can start plotting their challenge in the top flight of Welsh club cricket after having their promotion to the South Wales Premier League rubber-stamped, writes Chris Kirwan.

They club did the double in 2013 after lifting the Welsh Cup at the Swalec Stadium as well as finishing top of Division One of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League.

Panteg, who lost just one game on their way to the title, will now lock horns with the best club teams in the land after their promotion was confirmed at a league meeting on Wednesday evening.

"It's fantastic and we are delighted because this is something that the club has been working hard towards for a number of years," said captain Ian Bird.

"It's a relief that our promotion has been confirmed because we have wanted to be part of the Premier League since it was established (in 2010).

"Now we can't wait until next season – and I feel that we have got a squad that can compete in the top flight.

"This season we proved that we are a really good team with plenty of talent and I am sure our players will do well in the Premier League. It's an exciting time for the club."

Panteg have their fingers crossed that they will be bolstered by a pair of their old boys, opener Will Bragg and seamer John Glover, when the Glamorgan allocations are announced in spring.

Cardiff and Ammanford were relegated from the Premier League with Neath joining Panteg in heading up after winning Division One of the South Wales Cricket Association.
