GLAMORGAN bowlers have received a boost but Welsh cricket fans have been dealt a blow after big-hitting West Indies ace Chris Gayle has been granted an early release from his Somerset deal.

The 35-year-old superstar had been poised to feature in the Natwest T20 Blast clash in Cardiff on Saturday afternoon but will now make his Somerset finale against Surrey at Taunton this evening (Friday).

Gayle has been in majestic form, smashing 328 runs in three matches from 170 balls, featuring 29 sixes and 22 fours, but will now return to Jamaica a day ahead of schedule for the Caribbean Premier League.

“He is returning to the CPL, which kicks off very soon,” said Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard, the former Glamorgan batsman and coach.

“He has been absolutely brilliant for us, and he asked to be released one match sooner. We have accepted that and hope that he will come back.

“He has exceeded expectations – 328 runs is a good tournament for a lot of players, and he has done it in three games.

“He has been incredible and he has surpassed what we expected. When he asked to miss the Cardiff game, we supported him.

"Although slightly disappointed that Chris is unavailable for the Glamorgan game, his contribution to Somerset during his stay has been immense.

"I would like to wish Chris all the best for the CPL and hope to see him back in Somerset colours later in the summer.”

Gayle scored 92 on his debut at Essex, 151 not out against Kent and an unbeaten 85 against Hampshire last Friday.

His absence is a blow for Glamorgan, whose hopes for a bumper Saturday crowd will also be affected by a grim weather forecast.

Glamorgan face Gloucestershire in Bristol this evening (5.30pm) and are looking to make it three wins from five following last week’s thrilling four-run win against Middlesex.
