TORFAEN Tigers remain top of the Welsh Conference South after a comfortable 48-4 win at Cardiff Spartans.

The four-day turnaround following the first win in their existence was not enough for the Spartans, as the Tigers showing exactly why they are champions by running in 10 tries.

The Tigers took an early lead when skipper Louie Pengelly crashed over from short range before the hosts replied in the corner to level the scores.

Torfaen then crossed through second row Todd Elliott, centre Andrew Barlow and Wales under-16 full back Liam Silver.

It wasn’t until winger Corey Clarke crossed for the Tigers’ fifth try that they converted one with Connar Goode adding the extras for a 22-4 half-time lead.

The second half was a one-sided affair as the Tigers asserted their dominance scoring five unanswered tries through winger Sam Hancox, centre Owen Dare, hooker Ryan Bates and two for debutant prop Craig Price, Goode adding three more goals.

NEWPORT Titans move into joint fourth place and are on Gwendraeth Valley Raiders’ heels following a 38-14 win over the west Wales newcomers.

With both teams incredibly hot in the summer solstice sunshine, the Raiders and Titans fought in a physical but fair battle in Maesglas with the two teams evenly matched at many times in the game.

Titans were the first to score with a fantastic sprint from James Casey which was converted by Dwaine Bailey.

Another two tries and one conversion shortly afterwards put the home team 16-0 up in less than 20 minutes.

It was at this point that the Raiders started to find their feet with Titans conceding back to back penalties for various offences.

Raiders kept pushing the defence over about five sets until they finally got the break though they deserved. The conversion made the score 16-6.

Titans managed to get one back to keep the lead fairly substantial with the third of the afternoon from James Casey.

Raiders soon hit back though with two good tries but Casey yet again showed he was the fastest player on the pitch, running in another try from 60 metres.

The heat took its toll on the Raiders who were unlucky to not get any more tries that afternoon while the Titans ran in another three.

A very clean yet physical game was played by both teams but the Titans just had the edge in the second half to run away with things.
