BEDWAS will hope to have ironed out their defensive deficiencies that cost them so dearly in their British and Irish Cup qualifier when they kick off their Principality Premiership campaign against Llanelli on Sunday.

The Bridge Field outfit had a shocker when they hosted Newport a fortnight ago, slipping to a 41-25 defeat that saw the Black and Ambers cross their line six times.

Head coach Steve Law held a video nasty session in which the squad put their hands up to individual errors that cost the side dearly.

They cannot afford to be as generous against a dangerous Llanelli side that ran in 61 tries last term, the third highest tally in the league.

Bedwas finished sixth last term after ending up fourth in 2012/13 and will hope to be gunning for another top-half finish rather than a relegation dogfight.

With four of their opening five games at Bridge Field a fast start is needed and new recruit Jack Maynard, who has signed from Cardiff, says the squad is optimistic of another good campaign.

"Over the course of the past few years the club has always been pushing for the play-offs and we are now perceived as a really solid club," said the 19-year-old fly-half from Carmarthen.

"We had a really good pre-season and we have learnt a lot from the Newport game, even if we didn't get the win that we wanted.

"It was uncomfortable for some individuals in the room when we looked back at it but there were still some positives, especially at the start of the game when we were outstanding in attack.

"There's a good mood in the camp and we are really looking forward to getting going. Hopefully we can start with a win and push on from there."
