FLANKER Scott Matthews has called on Cross Keys to start as they finished in Bedford when they welcome the Blues to Pandy Park this afternoon (kick-off 2.30pm), writes Chris Kirwan.

Keys stunned Bedford at Goldington Road in October when captain Leon Andrews crossed at the death to enable Dorian Jones to convert for a 23-22 victory.

Today is the final home game of the tournament for the Gwent side and they are determined to sign off on a winning note after losing to unbeaten Pool Four leaders Doncaster and Cornish Pirates.

"Bedford have a big pack and a few players who enjoy throwing the ball around so we have to get up off the line at them," said all-action openside Matthews.

"We really took it to them at the end of the game in Bedford and they struggled to stay with us, so we have to do that from the first whistle this time."

Keys suffered a 30-21 home defeat to the Cornish Pirates last weekend meaning that, like Bedford, their hopes of a quarter-final place have gone.

But Dragons flanker Matthews insists there is plenty to play for with the regional contingent looking to force their way into the Guinness Pro12 mix and Keys regulars aiming to build up a head of steam for the Principality Premiership.

"We need to get back on track and we have to finish the tournament strongly," said the 20-year-old.

"This tournament is a higher standard than the Premiership so it's an opportunity to impress the Dragons coaches and put our hands up for selection.

"If we fall apart at this stage then it won't look good and everyone wants to finish the British and Irish Cup positively."

Matthews has been one of the standout performers for Keys this season and has been captaining the side in the absence of injured centre Leon Andrews.

"It's been a great experience," he said. "I haven't captained a side since junior rugby but the team have been really supportive.

"I am a young captain but have been surrounded by experience with players like (number eight) Adam Powell being a great help."
