PONTYPOOL flanker Rob Nash is hoping to enjoy another Swalec Cup upset when taking on Bedwas at Bridge Field tomorrow evening, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 28-year-old was captain of the Cross Keys side that upset the odds to win the trophy in 2012, beating Pontypridd 32-19 at the Millennium Stadium.

And Nash is hoping to once again enjoy the magic of the cup when Pooler, fourth in the Swalec Championship, take on Bedwas, sixth in the Principality Premiership, on their own turf.

"Anything can happen in cup rugby, especially when it's a Gwent derby," said the openside, who returned to his hometown club from Coventry last summer.

"We're going to Bedwas with nothing to lose, the pressure is all on them and hopefully we will enjoy the underdogs tag.

"It will be tough and they are always a dogged team, especially at home, but we just have to go at them all guns blazing.

"We've got aspirations of getting back into the Premiership and this will give us a good indication of where we are at. A good cup run would be great for morale going into next season and it's definitely a winnable game."

It's been a tough start to the year for Pooler, who parted company with director of rugby Alun Carter and lost three of four January fixtures, the latest a plucky 8-7 defeat at Narberth.

Bedwas are also attempting to get back on the horse after their Principality Premiership playoff bid was harmed by a 20-3 loss at Aberavon.

Steve Law's side headed into that game on the back of excellent bonus-point wins against Llanelli and Cross Keys and the head coach has demanded that there is more bite than there was at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

"Good Premiership sides have consistency and certain aspects of our game were nowhere near where they have been," said Law.

"I am looking for a reaction and for the players to put pride back in their performance, playing with more energy and a good attitude.

"It wasn't good enough on Saturday and I am expecting much better because this is going to be a tough game and an 80-minute battle."

The winner of tonight's game, which was postponed in January when high winds damaged the Bridge Field clubhouse, will host Cardiff Met in round two on Saturday, February 21.
