NEWPORT RFC and Friends of Newport Rugby are holding a Hall of Fame dinner next month to induct more great figures from the club’s rich and colourful history.

Now in its fourth year, it will be held on the evening of Friday, March 27 in the Bisley Suite at Rodney Parade.

Kevin Jarvis, secretary of Friends of Newport Rugby Trust and a member of Newport RFC’s committee, said: “This will be the fourth event and it’s sure to be a great night.

“Who will be included this year? Come along and find out.

“Black and Amber heroes from throughout the history of our club will be involved.

“There will be speeches, presentations and lots of fantastic stories about one of the most famous teams in world rugby.”

Last year's inductees were the entrepreneurial Phillips family who ensured rugby took root in the city in the 1870s; dazzling outside-half Roy Burnett who graced the stage for the Black and Ambers between 1945 and 1959; British and Irish Lions and Grand Slam winner, wing Gareth Evans; popular back row forward Geoff Evans captained Newport for five seasons between 1972 and 1981; centre Brian Jones, who holds the record of being only the second player to defeat all three major touring sides on Welsh soil; fearless flanker Roger Powell who put his body on the line for the club between 1976 and 1990; Charles Pritchard, a British captain killed in a raid on a German trench during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and a star forward in Wales’ 3-0 victory over New Zealand in 1905; flanker Alan ‘Algy’ Thomas, who made a try-saving tackle in the 1963 triumph over the All Blacks; centre Dick Uzzell, who dropped the goal which won that match, and wing Stuart Watkins whose cross kick led to Uzzell’s famous three-pointer.

Starting at 6.30pm, tickets for March 27 are now on sale at £30 each from the ticket office on 01633 674990 or Kevin Jarvis at kevin.jarvis@ntlworld.com.

Seats can be booked individually or in tables of ten.
