AS NEW Zealand prepare to defend their World Cup, legendary wing Jonah Lomu gave guests in Cwmbran an insight into what makes an All Black.

The sporting great was at a World Cup preview dinner at the Parkway Hotal and Spa that was attended by a crowd of over 200 and was hosted by Bristol coach Sean Holley and supported the Wooden Spoon charity.

Lomu transformed rugby with his performances in the 1995 and 1999 World Cups, scoring 15 tries and giving right wingers nightmares with his pace and power.

He told the crowd that he fought sweat and tears to wear the famous jersey: "I looked up to some great players and we all had a common bond among the All Blacks senior players.

"Senior players run the team. That what makes the All Blacks successful. My first game I roomed with the great John Kirwan and I was very proud to learn from him."

New Zealand are hot favourites to retain the crown they won on home soil four years ago but Lomu says it won't be easy.

"|You need that bit of luck for you have to go and win it," he said. "It could come down to a referee or a forward pass. During recent World Cups kicks have made the difference."

Kerry Jennings, general manager of the Parkway, said: "It was a great evening and to welcome such a wonderful sporting legend like Jonah Lomu to the hotel was a real pleasure."
