NEWPORT will attempt to win back-to-back away games in the Principality Premiership for the first time in 19 months when they travel to Carmarthen Quins on Saturday (kick-off 1.30pm).

The Black and Ambers are already closing in on last season's tally of five league wins thanks to successes against Neath, Bedwas and last Friday's 48-28 victory at Bridgend.

They ran in six tries at the Brewery Field and will take that positive approach to Carmarthen to face a Quins side who are somewhat surprisingly struggling near the foot of the table with one win from six fixtures.

Newport, who finished bottom last season, sit seventh in the table and are determined to keep climbing.

They will hope that history repeats itself – the last time they won successive away games was in March 2014 when they won at Bridgend and then in Carmarthen.

"There were a lot of positives from Bridgend," said defence coach Lewis Evans. "It was a bit of an arm wrestle to half-time but we pulled through and it was a good win.

"But we are not going to just accept that level of performance – we have to keep moving forward and the cherry was taken off the cake by letting them come back for a (four-try) bonus point at the end.

"We've got another tough game this weekend against a Carmarthen side and it's so important that we back up what we did in Bridgend, which we didn't do at Ebbw Vale earlier this season after winning in Neath."

Newport suffered a 44-10 drubbing in the league meeting between the sides last year before enduring a frustrating 31-20 Swalec Cup quarter-final exit out west.

"That game was one that we could have, should have won," said Evans. "It will be played in windy conditions and it's vital that we play in the right areas.

"Game management is important and Arwel has been playing superbly, his running rugby is unbelievable and he is definitely one for the future.

"He has been running the show recently with the combination at scrum-half of another young player in Owen Davies or more experience if we need it in Ryan James."
