IT WAS always going to be a building process under a new boss but Ebbw Vale head coach Nigel Davies wants to show more than just glimpses of attacking panache when they host Carmarthen Quins tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 2.30pm).

The Steelmen knew that they would have to contend with second season syndrome in 2015/16 after a stunning return to the Principality Premiership last term in which they finished as runners-up.

Added to the mix was a change at the helm with former Wales, Scarlets and Gloucester supremo Davies taking over the reins from Jason Strange, who left for a full-time job with the Welsh Rugby Union.

Ebbw have made a solid enough start with four wins from seven to sit in sixth place in the table but could do with steadying the ship after successive losses to Cross Keys and Llanelli.

Both defeats have left Davies frustrated, especially last Saturday’s 22-18 loss on his return to Parc y Scarlets.

“We have played some good rugby and put some lovely stuff together but we just haven’t been clinical,” lamented the former centre.

“We dominated and played all the rugby and speaking to (Llanelli great and his former coaching partner) Gareth Jenkins and others afterwards, they were all asking how we didn’t win.

“The bigger picture is that we are trying to change the way the team plays and expand our game. We are showing glimpses of that and are starting to get comfortable with the different things that have been brought in.

“I’m really positive about the way the boys have taken to the way that we are trying to move things on but we also need to start taking our chances and getting the wins.”

They will be favourites to do so against a Carmarthen Quins side who are somewhat surprisingly languishing near the foot of the table.

Last week they were condemned to a sixth loss out of seven when edged out 30-22 by Newport out west.

Ebbw will be without back row forward Harri Keddie, who is set to feature in Newport Gwent Dragons’ British and Irish Cup squad’s friendly with Harlequins at the Stoop on Monday.
