EBBW Vale head coach Nigel Davies admits they have to up their game if they are to stun champions Pontypridd on their own turf tomorrow (kick-off 2pm).

It looks likely that the Principality Premiership trophy will once again be lifted after a grand final at Sardis Road as Ponty are building a lead despite going down to defeat at Cross Keys a fortnight ago.

Ponty triumphed last season by beating the Steelmen 28-14 in the final and the runners-up are part of a large group with ambitions of taking their crown.

With four wins and four losses, Davies' men have yet to really hit their straps this term but the former Wales centre knows that their best is needed at Sardis.

"It's always one of the biggest games of the season against the team who have been at the top for a number of years," said Davies.

"Pontypridd are the side that everybody measure themselves against, it's a big challenge and one that should focus minds.

"It all starts with the basics against them – your set piece, defence and contact area – and we are going to have to step it up a couple of notches."

Ebbw have been edged out in their last three fixtures, having to settle for losing bonus points against Cross Keys, Llanelli and Carmarthen Quins.

The Quins triumphed at Eugene Cross Park thanks to a late interception try but nobody is panicking.

"We've lost three games in a row and know there is a lot to improve on but equally we could easily have won all three," said Davies.

"From a coaching point of view we are giving the players a clear and consistent picture of how we want to play and of what they have been doing well and what they are doing not so well. The message is clear and the players are working hard."

The Steelmen will be able to call upon the services of Wales Under-20s back row forward Harri Keddie after he featured for Newport Gwent Dragons in their friendly at Harlequins on Monday.
