BEDWAS attempt to put the "icing on the cake" of a fine start to the Principality Premiership when they head to Bridgend this weekend, writes Chris Kirwan.

The men from Bridge Field won away at Llandovery last weekend to make it four out of five fixtures with their sole loss coming on opening weekend when edged out by Pontypridd.

If they can keep their excellent form going at the Brewery Field then they will be sitting pretty in the race for the top eight as teams pause for reflection during the British and Irish Cup and Foster's Challenge Cup.

"It's been a successful first block and we had a very good away win at Llandovery, which makes Bridgend all the more important," said head coach Steve Law.

"Another win would be the icing on the cake but we will have to be at our best against a very combative Bridgend side.

"They've lost four but have been better than that. They have been very solid at the set piece and have created opportunities without taking them.

"We are preparing for this game as we would for a cup final because you can't play poorly and beat Bridgend."

Bedwas have been forced into a few changes with Dragons duo Joe Davies and George Gasson absent at lock and wing respectively.

"Joe and George have been top quality for us recently but it gives an opportunity to others and Geraint Edmunds and Andy Evans have been waiting for their chance," said Law.

While Bedwas have lost just one, Bargoed have been on the right side of the result just once as they get to grips with life in the Premiership.

The Bulls have put in some solid performances to go with their excellent win against Swansea but will be hoping to have more to show for their efforts when they host Carmarthen Quins.

They endured a 16-5 home loss to Llanelli last weekend and chairman Neil Carter said afterwards that the side know they need to avoid getting on the wrong side of the officials.

"We're very frustrated with that performance. The penalty count was hugely against us and we'll need to look very closely at the match analysis to see where the referee was picking us up," he said.

"Our set piece didn't function in the second half despite us outscoring the opposition. It's getting very tight in the bottom eight so we'll want to put things right against Carmarthen Quins."
