NEWPORT entertain in-form Llandovery on Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm) having ended their own disappointing run of results at just the right time.

Craig Warlow’s Black and Ambers secured just a second win of the season in the Principality Premiership when edging past Neath 12-10 just over a week ago.

They still face a huge uphill task if they want to force their way into the top eight in time for the January split, but that victory at the Gnoll will have given them a big confidence boost.

What they would love to do now is start winning at Rodney Parade – both of Newport’s triumphs have come away from home.

In the Drovers, Newport face a side currently seventh in the table thanks to five wins from eight games.

They have won their last two fixtures with results that would have made the rest of the league sit up and take notice.

First, head coach Euros Evans led his charges to a deserved 20-10 defeat of reigning champions Ebbw Vale at Eugene Cross Park.

Scrum-half Rhodri Davies was one of the stars for the Drovers on that day and Newport will need to pay close attention to him on Sunday.

Then, last Friday, they stormed to a 37-3 hammering of Pontypridd at Church Bank, in a game that saw referee Gareth Newman dish out four red cards.

After Llandovery full-back Lee Rees had been sent off early in the second half for taking out a man in the air, the official dismissed three more players following a mass brawl.

Dan Godfrey and Owen Sheppeard of Pontypridd and the hosts’ Richard Brooks all left the field for an early bath.

Newport won the corresponding fixture last season 28-20, before the Drovers gained revenge in April, prevailing 36-30 in west Wales.
