BEDWAS know they are virtually guaranteed a place in the Principality Premiership top eight for the second half of the season, but coach Steve Law insists no-one will be taking anything for granted until their position is mathematically assured.

The Bridge Field outfit all but cemented their status among the Premiership’s elite when the league splits on January 7 following a thrilling 23-22 defeat of reigning champions Ebbw Vale on Boxing Day.

Only a highly unlikely set of results in the last two rounds of fixtures before the split is going to deny Bedwas now – a point at home against Llanelli tomorrow (kick-off 1.30pm) will make their place in the top eight absolutely certain.

Reflecting on that single-point victory over the Steelmen, sealed by Aaron Bramwell’s late try, and looking ahead to a New Year’s Eve clash with the Scarlets, Law said: “Ebbw played some good rugby to put us under pressure in the second half but we rallied well in the last few minutes.

“It was all us in the first half but we left about 10 points out there and that was disappointing.

“They had the momentum in the second half and their kicking game was excellent.

“We always had it in us to cause them trouble and I was glad with our composure towards the end and how we finished the game off.”

He added: “Mathematically, we need a point to be sure of the top eight, and it would be a big disappointment if we didn’t finish in the top half now.

“We know we can’t take anything for granted although I’d like to think we have done everything we need for the top eight.”

Bedwas are fifth in the table, seven points above Cardiff in eighth, and eight clear of ninth-placed Ebbw – Law’s men go to Cardiff on January 7.
