FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons fly-half Steffan Jones is returning to Wales to play for Bedwas in the Principality Premiership, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 26-year-old from Bargoed, who can also play at full-back and centre, arrives from Ampthill after spending the last three seasons in England.

After catching the eye with Cross Keys, Jones made his Dragons debut as a replacement against Gloucester in October, 2010 and scored a try on his first regional start against Cardiff Blues at Rodney Parade the following April.

He went on to make 45 appearances for the Dragons and still holds the record for points in a match after booting 27, seven penalties and three conversions, against London Welsh in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Jones, a Wales 7s international, moved to Championship side Bedford in 2014 and spent last season working under former Dragons boss Paul Turner at Ampthill in National League Division One.

He said: "I'm delighted to have signed for Bedwas, with my move back to Wales having being in England over the last three years.

"I'm looking forward to joining up with the team over the pre-season period and getting stuck in."

Bedwas believe the signing of Jones can help them build on a memorable season in which they won the Foster's Challenge Cup and made it to the semi-finals of the Tier One Premiership play-offs.

Director of rugby Mark Lewis said: "He has such a wealth of experience – playing in regional derbies, the dog-eat-dog English Championship and on the very athletic 7s circuit."

"It is very beneficial for squad planning to secure a quality signing so soon after the end of the season.

"We have built a respected, ambitious and successful group here and Steffan will be a big part of our progression."

Meanwhile, Bedwas have called an extraordinary general meeting on Friday (7pm start) to discuss future plans.

"Difficult trading conditions, exacerbated by irregular fixtures in the 2016/17 season, mean that the club must consider its options with a view to continuing success in the coming season," read a statement.
