CAPTAIN Scott Matthews returns to the Cross Keys squad for tomorrow’s clash at Pontypridd, with his side looking to build on last weekend’s downing of previously unbeaten Bedwas.

Keys travel to Sardis Road (kick-off 2.30pm) in the hope of landing back-to-back wins for the first time in the Principality Premiership’s eastern conference this season.

Matthews suffered a collar bone injury against Merthyr on the opening day of the campaign but re-joins the matchday ranks alongside fellow back-rower Tom Lampard.

The club initially thought Lampard had done serious damage when he injured a knee during the defeat to Cardiff on September 16 but the problem wasn’t as bad as they first feared.

Matthews and Lampard come into a squad buoyed by that victory over table-topping Bedwas at Pandy Park.

“I was more pleased for the boys than anything else last Saturday, and that win was exactly what they needed,” said Keys head coach Greg Woods.

“It was down to sheer hard work really, and we righted some wrongs from the second half against Cardiff.

“We made our tackles, put Bedwas under pressure and defended well.

“Bedwas went into the lead quite late in the game but we showed a lot of character to come back and win.”

He added: “Scott Matthews is back this week and that’s huge for us.

“Having your captain available is always good and he will be involved in the squad.

“He had a bad bump on his collar bone in the first game against Merthyr.

“Tom Lampard is also back from injury after missing last week.

“He picked up a knee problem at Cardiff and we thought it was a serious one, but fortunately it’s not and he is free to play.

“As a squad, we’re getting stronger every week.”
