BEDWAS host Bridgend in the Principality Premiership tomorrow (kick-off 11am) after safely negotiating their passage into the National Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Ian Gardner’s men secured a last-eight berth with a comfortable 40-14 victory away to Championship outfit Beddau in a rearranged tie.

They will now entertain Gwent rivals Newport next Saturday for a place in the semi-finals of a tournament the club has never won.

Their progression in the competition was aided by two yellow cards for Beddau at Mount Pleasant Park, while man of the match Lewis Evans scored one of the visitors’ six tries.

An early penalty try got the scoreboard ticking for Bedwas then Evans raced over from 40 metres with Beddau down to 14 men.

Once Beddau were restored to 15 they thwarted Bedwas’ efforts to score and there were no more points added in the first half.

Luke Crane, Adam Williams, replacement Tom Rowlands and Mike Callow crossed after the restart to take Gardner’s charges to the 40-point mark.

But the home side kept going to the end and were rewarded with a brace of converted tries by Regan Wilson and Gareth Hopkins to give the scoreline some respectability.

While that quarter-final with the Black and Ambers is already on the horizon, head coach Gardner knows his team must keep their focus on this weekend’s clash with a struggling Bridgend side.

The Ravens almost got the better of Ebbw Vale last time out before succumbing to a 21-18 loss on home soil.

So even though results might not be going their way, Bridgend are a side desperate for a win to lift morale and give the Brewery Field faithful something to cheer.

Bedwas aren’t firing on all cylinders themselves but back-to-back wins – against Neath and Beddau – was just what they would’ve wanted.
