Powell close to Wasps move

WASPS are on the brink of signing Andy Powell after Cardiff Blues accused the Wales and Lions back row of "losing his way’’.

The 28-year-old's Blues contract was due to expire in 2012 but the Amlin Challenge Cup champions confirmed today that he has been released.

In 2008 Powell made his Test debut and has gone on to win 14 caps, but he was suspended by Wales during this year's Six Nations following an incident that catapulted him into the headlines.

Just hours after helping Wales complete a stunning comeback victory against Scotland, he was arrested for and admitted to driving a golf buggy on the M4 while drunk.

Wales coach Warren Gatland recalled him for last month's tour to New Zealand, but his hopes of participating in the Tests were ended by a thigh problem.

Wasps have moved for the bulldozing number eight, who could confirm his move to Adams Park as early as tomorrow.

Blues director of rugby David Young revealed the decision to allow Powell to leave was approved by club and player.

Young said: "When he's fully focused Andy is one of the best back-row forwards in the country, as he showed when he was deservedly called up to represent his country and the Lions during his time with the Blues.

"However, it's fair to say this last season has been a difficult one for Andy following the unwise incident with the golf buggy and he has lost his way somewhat.

"Both parties felt it was in the best interests of the region and Andy if we parted company and we wish him well with his future rugby career.’’ Powell released a statement through his management company explaining his decision to leave was based on his desire for a change of scenery.

"Andy would like to thank Cardiff Blues for all of their support over the last five memorable years,’’ said his agent Emanuele Palladino.

"His time at the club has been extremely enjoyable and positive, and has seen him enjoy a meteoric rise through the ranks to become a Welsh international and Lion.

"Andy, however, felt that he needed a new challenge and sees this next season as pivotal in his ambitions to represent his country and play in the World Cup next year.’’
