LEADERS Mathern opened a seven-point lead with a game in hand over second-placed Severn Tunnel B with an 11-0 demolition of Devauden Green.

Harry Lewis hit a first-half hat-trick and there were goals for Sammy Davies, Jordan Barrett, Callum England, Billy Jeffery (2), Gary Burchill, Johnny O’Neill and James Burchill – a fact which pleased manager Lee Baker.

“It was great to see goals from all over the park and I’m especially pleased for Harry and for a clean sheet,” he said.

“We played football for 90 minutes and gave them bit of a lesson. We’re showing a desire to win every game and this was the icing on the cake for a brilliant start.

“Our feet are on the ground though. We know it's a long season but we have put ourselves in a great position, top of the league and we deserve to be there.”

Devauden manager Steve Prettyjohn said the match was a good lesson for his young side.

“Mathern were the better side and it was a good game,” he said.

“We have a lot of youngsters in our team and this match was a learning curve for them and they’ll be a better side for the experience.

“We haven’t been together long and we have players from Devauden, Magor and Chepstow so we are still getting to know each other. But we’ll get there!”

Severn Tunnel were 5-3 winners at Tintern Abbey B thanks to goals from Keith Morse, Callum Wheeler, David Scanlon, Craig Diffey and Craig Larcombe.

Their manager John Abram said: “We went there as underdogs and gave a real statement that we are not in the division to make up the numbers.”

His opposite number, Steve Ball said: "We played some superb football. Ben Mackie, who scored for us, was excellent in the middle and we were very unlucky to lose. Nathan Fletcher was our man of the match with two well-taken goals.”

Underwood are third following a 7-1 home victory over Thornwell Red & White while Portskewett & Sudbrook shared eight goals and the points with visitors Castle B.

The home side’s goals came from Chris Commins (CORRECT), Nathan Edinburgh (2) and Dean Clough.

Sudbrook CC B (Gareth Huntley 2. Craig Stephenson. Neil Richards) edged out Chepstow Athletic (Dan Webb, John List, Will Morgan) 4-3 with Athletic manager Andrew Methuen saying: “It was the same old story. We played well but two lapses cost us.”
