Welsh League Division 2

Cardiff Metropolitan Uni 1 Chepstow Town 2

CHEPSTOW Town left it late to overcome the Metropolitan with Matt Davies firing the winner five minutes from the end.

Playing on their 3G (artificial grass) pitch, the Met played slick football on the very fast surface and Town struggled to cope with the pace of the game but managed to restrict the home side to long-range shots, all of which were dealt with by Town keeper Gareth Wesson.

At the other end, Town created and wasted three excellent chances and the first half ended goalless.

The second half began in the same mould with Met trying to run Town’s players off their feet but gradually the visitors began to come into the game before falling behind.

But Town suffered a setback when a defensive mix-up allowed Met to take the lead, the visitors losing Wesson through injury at the same time.

Sam Rushworth replaced the stricken keeper but the loss only inspired Town to double their efforts and new signing Jonathan Kift joined Matt Davis up front.

The pair began to wreak havoc in Met’s final third and Town skipper Richard Sharrett smashed a 30-yard shot over the home keeper to equalise.

The visitors piled on the pressure and were awarded a penalty but Sharrett’s kick was saved.

Davies had been having a frustrating afternoon but made up for it in the 85th minute when he scored the winner.

Although the Met stormed back in search of an equaliser, the Town defence held firm to take the three points and leapfrog their opponents into seventh place.

Town are away again this Saturday when they visit Penrhiwceiber.
