CROSS Keys have boosted their squad after recruiting promising former Pontypridd second row Simon Williams into their ranks.

The lock is a cousin of former Pandy Park favourite and ex-Newport Gwent Dragons back row forward Jevon Groves.

He is a welcome addition to last season’s Principality Premiership runners-up and Swalec Cup finalists having started their season in sparkling form.

Greg Woods’ men have already signed experienced former Dragons and Newport scrum half James Leadbeater, who can also play full back, from Ebbw Vale for this campaign and have also snapped up flanker Carl Townsend.

Williams joins Keys from Swalec League One East Central side Llantrisant after playing with Premiership side Aberavon last season.

He could make his debut in Saturday’s league clash as Keys look to make it four competitive wins out of four this season with their Gwent derby at home to Bedwas.

Williams’ arrival in the second row comes at a particularly welcome time with their stalwart Tom Lampard out for at least the rest of the month after hurting his shoulder during the 31-12 hammering of Newport in the British and Irish Cup a fortnight ago.

Head coach Woods said of the club’s new boy: “Simon hurt his knee playing for Pontypridd in the British and Irish Cup (in 2013) but is fully fit now.

“He comes to us with a very good reputation and he really bolsters us at second row.”

Last week Keys expressed their delight at Leadbeater’s capture and Woods is also pleased to have brought former Newport and Gilfach Goch back rower Townsend, 26, on board.

He made his first start for the club on the blindside in Saturday’s 33-18 bonus point win away to Aberavon.

Woods added: “Carl really impressed during pre-season and had a fine game in a fantastic win over Aberavon on Saturday."
