NEWPORT’S Lee Evans returns to the Wolverhampton Wanderers squad this weekend determined to maintain his impressive start to the Championship season and earn another chance with Wales.

The former Newport County AFC midfielder earned his first senior call-up for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus but was forced to miss the matches after picking up a hamstring injury in Wolves’ defeat against Huddersfield Town.

But the 20-year-old has now returned to training with his club and is aiming to start at Millwall on Saturday and stay in the thoughts of national manager Chris Coleman.

“I had the call on the Wednesday before the Huddersfield game to be told I was in the Wales senior squad for the first time,” Evans said.

“That was a massive honour for me but it turned into a mix of emotions a few hours later when I picked up the injury at the game.

“On the positive side it could have been a lot worse.

“I was still able to go and meet up with Wales on the Monday.

“I would have been close to contention for selection on the Friday but I wouldn’t really have been able to train and obviously they needed a squad to be fit to train straightaway and through the week.

“I couldn’t quite do that, but I stayed on for the awards night on the Monday and it was nice to meet all the players and the staff – it has given me a taster of it and I want to be going up stage hopefully picking up my caps in the future.

“It has given me a real incentive and hopefully my time will come again.

“If I am not playing well for Wolves then I won’t be in with a chance of playing for Wales.

“Playing well for Wolves is my number one priority and Chris Coleman told me if I keep doing that I will be back in.”

Evans is now involved in the hotly-contested battle for places in the midfield ahead of the trip to the New Den.

He added: “I’m back training now and should be 100 per cent by the end of the week as long as nothing goes wrong.

“With a good few days training under my belt I should be fine for Saturday.

“I want to try and pick up from where I left off but I know there’s strong competition now.

“It’s up to me to try and get myself back in the team and prove the gaffer right if he selects me.”
