AFTER playing second fiddle to Finn Russell for Scotland this autumn, Duncan Weir wants to strike a blow in the bid to wear 10 for Glasgow when he returns to club rugby against Newport Gwent Dragons.

The 23-year-old came off the bench all three November Tests and the Rodney Parade region don't need to be told about his quality.

Weir produced a memorable display at Glasgow's old Firhill ground when booting eight penalties from eight attempts in a 24-19 success in 2011.

The fly-half is hoping to get the nod ahead of Russell on Sunday as the Warriors' internationals return and try and build up a head of steam for their crucial European Rugby Champions Cup double-header with Toulouse.

"We have got a huge run of games coming up with four at home that will be key in our league and European campaigns," Weir said in The Scotsman.

"It will be a great challenge, as a player you have to respond to the opportunities that come your way and that is certainly what I am looking to do. It's exciting to be back at Glasgow."

Weir is looking to help the Warriors strike back after being beaten 19-9 by the Scarlets in Llanelli, only their second defeat of the season.

He said: "I watched it in the (Scotland) team hotel and if you lose any game it is going to be tough to take, especially when the club has been on such a successful run.

"But I look back at that Bath week when we were coming off a defeat to Ulster and were kicking ourselves but we came out and put on the best show we have put on this season in front of a packed-out Scotstoun.

"It was great and we have the opportunity to do the same on Sunday. Even though it is not a European tie, not as glamorous, it means exactly the same to this group of players.

"It is one we are going to have to target hard. We managed to win down at the Dragons (in September) but we know they can come up here and put on a good performance as they did last season when they managed to beat us twice."

The Dragons actually have the edge on their hosts from league encounters in Glasgow having won six and drawn one of their 11 fixtures.
