East Gwent Senior League roundup

UNDERWOOD SC A manager Sean Johnson virtually conceded the Division 1 title to leaders Sudbrook CC A – despite his team’s 13-0 demolition of Thornwell Red & White.

“I'd say Sudbrook are favourites for the league, given that they are a point better off if we won all our games in hand,” Johnson admitted.

“Our game against them is at their place but we will thrive on being the underdogs and the pressure is on them not to throw it away.”

“It was a great result today, especially after dropping points late on against Severn Tunnel,” he said.

“We changed our formation to 4-3-3, and it paid off with the majority of our goals coming from wide positions and if it wasn't for Thornwell’s keeper it could have

easily been 20.

“But that doesn't take anything away from Thornwell’s performance. They were dogged all game and the lad Wilson at the back had a great game.

“Although it’s good to close the gap on Sudbrook’s goal difference we don’t realistically expect to catch them.

Underwood’s goals came from Kyle Brown (4), Craig Owen (2), Kyle Harrison (2), Matthew Seabourne (2), James May, Lee Ryder and David Rees.

Meanwhile, Sudbrook beat Undy Athletic 5-0 thanks to goals from Rob Thorn (2), Tom Stuart, Oli Mottram and Mark O’Hara.

“After last week's game ruined the middle of our pitch we had to hire the other one to ensure we could play,” co-manager Daryl Cann revealed.

“We were 4-0 up at half-time and made it 5-0 soon after the restart but Undy attacked more, mostly through Harry James, but the boys were up for the challenge and it was good to keep a clean sheet.

“It’s another five goals towards the goal difference and we now have five must-win games to go!

The only other Division 1 match played resulted in a 4-1 away win for Severn Tunnel at Tintern Abbey A.

In a rearranged Gill Cup tie, Chepstow Town A booked their place in the semi-final against Underwood SC A with a 4-1 victory over Caldicot Castle A.
