HARRI Keddie avenged last year’s heartbreak with a last-gasp try as Newport Gwent Dragons edged out a star-studded Wasps lineup 17-14 to become the first Welsh name on the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s trophy.

In 2014 the Dragons finished runners up as Gloucester Rugby clinched their second-successive title, but tonight a determined performance overcame a Christian Wade inspired Wasps.

The Dragons opened up their evening with a quarter-final matchup with Sale Sharks, before overcoming defending champions Gloucester to set-up their final berth.

The Dragons started fast against Gloucester and James Benjamin bagged a score down the left within a minute of kick off. Ashton Hewitt then extended the lead with a converted try before Gloucester woke from their slumber and Mat Protheroe got them on the board.

Ben Vallacott then crashed over for the Cherry & Whites and the conversion gave Gloucester the lead.

However, Keddie was on hand to save the Dragons for the first time in the night and his try on the left meant the Welsh outfit would once again have the chance to go for glory.

That was going to be no easy feat however as an imperious Wasps lay in wait.

But the Dragons hadn’t read the script and Man of the Round Elliot Frewen showed his class with an early score that was converted by skipper Geraint Rhys Jones.

Wade turned on the class though and showed blistering pace to dart down the right and score only for Wasps to be pegged back by a Banjamin score.

Wade was once again on hand to provide the finishing touches as Wasps went ahead – Dan Robson with some brilliant work before offloading to the England man.

But Keddie once again popped up when it mattered and a dive for the line in the final play of the game meant the trophy was heading to Wales.
