FLYING winger Elliot Frewen says his confidence is surging as he prepares to start his season with Newport after outshining one of the most dazzling finishers in Europe, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 28-year-old from Pencoed was named as player of the tournament as Newport Gwent Dragons won the Singha Premiership 7s at the Twickenham Stoop.

Frewen was a key figure as the men from Rodney Parade stunned a star-studded Wasps side featuring England wing Christian Wade in the final.

The Black and Ambers winger, who was also named as player of the round in the Welsh leg win, says the experience has put a spring in his step ahead of the upcoming Principality Premiership season.

"Coming up against the likes of Elliot Daly and Christian Wade from Wasps is really good experience, and now I've got high hopes of having a strong season with Newport," said Frewen, who will try to add to his 33 Newport tries at Neath on Saturday.

"I think this win will tee us up well for the 15s season. I always say playing 7s stands us in good stead later on, and the Singha 7s is a quality tournament."

Dragons captain Geraint Rhys Jones believes a host of young players in his side will have caught the eye of the region's management team.

The full-back was joined by fellow senior squad members Matthew Pewtner, Harri Keddie, James Benjamin, Luc Jones, Ashton Hewitt and Angus O'Brien at the Stoop.

He said: "This is such a confidence booster for our team. There were a lot of young boys who had never played in front of a crowd like this before and they really stepped up against these big players to show that they're just as good.

"A lot of us were coming out here hoping to show that we're good enough to play in that game (against Connacht in the Guinness Pro12) and I think some of the performances will show Lyn Jones and the rest of the coaching team that we are ready to play.

"Hopefully now this will kick us on really well into the season. Winning lifts the entire team, and we want to carry this momentum into the start of the season."
