THE season may not be over for those chasing glory at Euro 2016 but a crop of professionals are already tuning up for 2016/17 under the watchful eye of a former Exiles goalkeeper in Newport.

Joe Perry is a personal trainer based in Phoenix Business Park, Telford Street and has been helping a number of full-timers keep ticking over in the close season.

Wolves' Lee Evans and Peterborough's Andrew Hughes, two of his former teammates at County, and ex-Exile Alex Rodman and Cardiff City starlet Theo Wharton, son of former Cwmbran favourite Sean, have been put through their paces.

"The players want to go back to their clubs fitter than they were last season so that they can push for a place in the starting XI," said Perry, who is now playing for Tiverton in the Southern League.

"They don't want to be at the back when pre-season starts so they come in for some injury prevention, speed drills and power work. Professionals are all tested now so they want to impress when they report back."

Perry doesn't just work with the pros and nothing changes for those who come to group training sessions.

"The principles are similar, everyone is an athlete and everybody gets treated the same," said Perry.
