AFTER proving to be fast healer from his latest injury setback, Wales centre Tyler Morgan hopes to start racking up the games for Newport Gwent Dragons, writes Chris Kirwan.

The 21-year-old from Caerleon was released from the squad for the autumn Tests at the start of November after suffering a grade two hamstring tear in training as it was likely to sideline him for at least four weeks.

It seemed another setback for a bright prospect who has spent plenty of his burgeoning career on the treatment table but just 11 days after it was announced he had left international camp he lined up for the Dragons.

Morgan featured off the bench in the Anglo-Welsh Cup win against the Scarlets and produced another lively cameo in the victory against Edinburgh in the Guinness Pro12 on Sunday.

His tally of seven appearances this season is already more than he managed in 2015/16 after suffering a serious shoulder injury in the World Cup quarter-final loss to South Africa, watching the gut-wrenching defeat on television in the Twickenham medial room.

Morgan is a player of undoubted promise but knows he needs to get out on the field to fulfil that potential.

He said: “I’ve had 30-odd games for the Dragons now and I remember when Lyn (Jones, former director of rugby) was here he told me I wouldn’t be any good until I had 50, so I’m not far off now!

“It’s about learning how to make the right decisions at the right times, so getting on the field and staying fit is key.”

Morgan is also watching and learning from teammates with fellow centre Sam Beard giving a tutorial against Edinburgh last Sunday.

The 26-year-old from New Zealand, who qualifies for Wales through his grandfather from Monmouth, has made a super start to life at the Dragons with some classy touches in midfield.

“Sam’s probably been the best centre we’ve had this season and I’ve learnt a lot from him. He is a player who makes those right decisions at the right time,” said Morgan.

“Look at him in the first half against Edinburgh when Angus made the line break then Sam had the opportunity to kick (through for the assist), he did and we scored. Second half I had a line break, didn’t kick and we didn’t score.

“That’s where I need to be. I’m quite modest and know I’ve got a lot to learn off the other players here.”

Morgan looks set to return to the starting line-up against Leinster in Dublin tomorrow evening (kick-off 7.35pm) as Beard is out with a dead leg.

The Dragons head to Ireland in high spirits thanks to their win against Edinburgh that lifted them to ninth in the Guinness Pro12, level on points with champions Connacht.

They’ve won four home games on the spin and are relishing the chance to upset second-placed Leinster and repeat their shock victory at the RDS in February, 2015.

“There’s a lot of smiles on faces and the momentum is key, you see that at every level of rugby confidence gives you a head start,” said Morgan.

“Leinster are a massive team with internationals and strength in depth so it will be a really challenging game, but we’ve shown we can win there before and there is no reason why we can’t do it again.”
