PONTYPOOL resume their WRU Championship campaign this afternoon with head coach Leighton Jones demanding the unbeaten league leaders become even more ruthless.

Pooler will be aiming to make it 15 wins from 15 when they entertain Glynneath, adding to the 33-10 success they enjoyed when the sides met out west in September

They have scored 69 tries and bagged eight bonuses this term but the boss believes they have not always turned pressure into points.

"I'd like to see us be a bit more ruthless if the truth be told," said the former hooker. "Some games we have dominated but the scoreboard hasn't looked like it.

"We have become a bit slack at times and that has meant we haven't been as convincing winners as we should have been a number of times.

"But what I find pleasing is that the senior players in the group have highlighted that as well."

It's natural that plenty of supporters are pondering whether Pooler can go through the season unbeaten.

Merthyr lost just two of 26 games last term while both Bargoed, in 2015, and Ebbw Vale, in 2014, were denied the achievement in the final furlongs, the former in the run-in while the Steelmen lost at Narberth in their last game before promotion.

Jones, however, won't entertain such talk of becoming WRU Championship 'invincibles'.

"We respect everyone and I genuinely believe anyone can beat anyone in this league," he said. "We are in a place where we will just concentrate on ourselves.

"If we go into every game with the right attitude and effort we are pretty confident in our own ability but if we slip off then we will come unstuck.

"We understand that it's not been done before to go unbeaten, despite some coming close, but it's not something that we have talked about.

"As a management group we are focused on making sure we keep hitting the mini targets that we set throughout the season. If we keep hitting those monthly targets then who knows where it will take us."

Newbridge start 2017 with just Dunvant beneath them in the table and will aim to cut the seven-point gap to Glamorgan Wanderers when they head to Bedlinog.

'Bridge triumphed 31-21 when the sides met in September but are yet to win away from the Welfare Ground this season.

In fact, they have bagged just one consolation bonus point from seven fixtures on the road, when edged out 9-8 by Skewen.
