NEWBRIDGE insist they will head to second-placed Narberth with victory on their minds despite the Pigs just needing a solitary bonus point to save their bacon.

‘Bridge travel to Pembrokeshire looking to climb from 11th in the Championship table and condemn Glamorgan Wanderers to relegation.

The scenario is simple at the Lewis-Lloyd Ground: the Pigs face the drop if they endure a pointless afternoon out west but even a heavy defeat wouldn’t matter if they cross for four tries.

Given that Narberth sit second in the table with 17 wins from 21 games, Newbridge are big underdogs for this afternoon’s encounter but they can take heart from what was a nightmare result for them a fortnight ago.

‘Bridge were celebrating a 50-13 thumping of Glamorgan Wanderers when news filtered through of relegation rivals Skewen taking a bonus point from an 18-11 loss at Narberth, a point that kept them above the Gwent side.

“We came off the field all elated and then found out that other results had gone against us,” said team manager John Day.

“Things haven’t gone our way recently and five wins would normally keep you up in the Championship, but it’s topsy-turvy league and our fate is still in our own hands.”

The Pigs have been in super form since February with four wins from five to give themselves a chance of beating the drop.

All four of those wins have been at the Welfare Ground and now they need to rise to the occasion on the road.

“We have got to go up there to win and can’t be thinking of bonus points,” said Day. “It’s a mammoth task against a very, very good side but we have turned things around since Christmas.

“Narberth are a proud side so know there is no chance of them rolling over and relaxing. They will be flat out so we have to be at our best.

“They boys have come a long way since the start of the season and the manner of our win against Glamorgan Wanderers was so pleasing. If they can repeat that performance I am sure we will be okay.

“At the start of the year it was a test just to get a team on the park but I am so proud of how far they have come.

“We’ve had a couple of costly missed opportunities and results haven’t gone for us but we’ve given ourselves a shot, so hopefully this won’t be the end of us in the Championship.”
