Brecon CC 1sts 94ao Sudbrook CC 1sts 191-7 Sudbrook won by 3 wickets

SUDBROOK first XI skipper Jamie Watkins paid tribute to two youngsters who played a major part in the team’s success at Brecon, writes Bob Cypher.

“A special mention to William Supple, a 14-year-old youth product who kept wicket quite brilliantly, conceding no byes and taking two catches behind the stumps, and also to Scott O’Leary, 16, who is another youth team product,” said Watkins.

“Both have a very bright future ahead of them.

“We travelled to Brecon with seven players missing from the previous week,” Watkins added.

“We struggled early on and were 40-4, but an excellent fifth-wicket partnership from Matthew Spencer (36) and Scott O’Leary’s maiden first team half-century took us to 140.

“Scott ended with 60 and some good, late contributions from Matthew Burton (22) and Edward Neale (11) gave us a respectable total of 191-7.

“We knew we would have to field and bowl well to defend the total, but aided by a rapidly deteriorating pitch we bowled Brecon out for 94 with more than 14 overs left.

“Ben Supple (1-17 off 7) and Jon Lewis (0-6 off 6 overs) gave us an excellent start, increasing the pressure on Brecon.”

Watkins (3-18) and Dean Wallace (5-28) then assumed responsibility in the middle overs and Brecon’s chase never gathered momentum due to some good bowling and fielding.

“We finish the first half of the season in second place, which is very pleasing, and we are hoping to kick on into the second half when we host Blackwood this Saturday.”
