NEW Dragons skills coach Barry Maddocks reckons speedster Hallam Amos has “all the credentials” to become a regular in the Wales side.

Rodney Parade flyer Amos made his long-awaited comeback last Friday in the Dragons’ first pre-season warm-up game against Montpellier.

The match saw Amos return to action some nine months after suffering a shoulder injury during his country’s autumn series defeat to Australia in Cardiff.

Fully rehabilitated, the 22-year-old is now ready to make up for lost time, and Maddocks, who has joined the region from Bath, is eager to see him keep developing.

And when asked if Amos could be a first-choice pick at national level over the next few years, he said: “He’s got all the credentials.

“He’s got the pace, the skill set, he understands the game, he’s an intelligent player, and my job is to help grow that and make him an even better player.

“I’m sure the other coaches are going to input in a different way to aid his development over the next year or so.”

He added: “He’s exciting, he’s got exceptional footwork, a good kicking game, and it’s nice to see him back.

“He’s been training exceptionally well for the last couple of weeks.”

Amos isn’t the only member of the Dragons squad to impress Maddocks since he arrived in Gwent.

“It’s an exciting group,” he said. “Since I’ve come in they’ve been keen to really grow and develop as a group, and as individuals, which is really exciting for me.

“Gav (Henson) has been really good with all the younger players, he has supported them, and he’s always spending time after sessions to help them with areas of expertise.

“He’s passing on his experience very well to the younger generation, so he has been a big influence so far with the lads, particularly the young ones.”

Maddocks went on to say: “It’s a group that wants to grow and learn, that’s for sure, and we’re just going to build for this season and hopefully get the right results.

“We’ve got to focus on ourselves and perform week to week, whoever we play against, and keep raising the bar.”

The Dragons continued their preparations for the new Guinness Pro14 season yesterday by training with Bath in Ystrad Mynach.

Aviva Premiership champions Exeter Chiefs lie in wait for the Dragons this Saturday as the league opener against Leinster on September 2 moves ever closer.

“The guys’ attitude in training this week has been really good and they’re excited for the game against Exeter,” said former Bath assistant academy manager Maddocks.
