Division Five

UNDY & Magor CC secured back-to-back promotions on Saturday and will play Division 4 cricket next summer, writes Bob Cypher.

The club knew that beating visitors Christchurch at Caldicot Leisure Centre would mean this Saturday’s trip to third-placed Penarth Thirds is of no consequence.

But when skipper Ryan Hudson lost the toss and was asked to bat first he wasn’t too pleased.

“After the heavy rain on Friday, we knew the wicket was going to be damp and tricky to bat on if required to do so first,” he said later.

"I lost the toss and we were put in to bat, but we applied ourselves excellently in the tricky conditions, with our openers John Hobbs and Harry James making a 50-run partnership in the first 12 overs.

“John was caught out shortly after for 16 and we lost another wicket almost immediately but Richard Hudson and Harry clocked up a partnership of 100, which gave the remaining batsmen free rein to play.

“Richard was stumped on 38, I joined Harry and put on 25 runs from nine balls before Harry was stumped on 115.

“His innings was absolutely faultless and a joy to watch as captain, as we finished on 223-8.”

Having set themselves up with the bat, Undy & Magor knew promotion was within touching distance and their bowling was equally as good.

Paul Smith (3-7 with six of his eight overs being maidens) was the pick of their bowlers while other contributions came from Richard Hudson (1-23), Sam Williams (1-38) and Ryan Hudson (2-21).

In reply, Christchurch’s skipper Joe Thomas, batting at five, made 75 not out, despite having little support, the first four wickets falling for seven runs.

“It was played in a great spirit even though Christchurch’s bid ended early,” Ryan added.

“I'm extremely proud of everyone who has contributed this season, on and off the field, including those who have little or no cricketing experience who have raised their hand when we've been a few players short.

“It's been a brilliant season, and we're certainly hoping for more of the same next year.”
