PONTYPOOL attempt to succeed where Ebbw Vale’s class of 2014 failed by winning at Narberth to secure a perfect season in the WRU National Championship tomorrow afternoon.

Pooler head to the Lewis-Lloyd Ground with an incredible record of 21 wins from 21 games, 19 of them with bonus points as they defended their crown with ease.

Leighton Jones’ men have racked up 136 tries and are expected to bag another success before being presented with their trophy out west… but events from four years ago should focus the minds.

Ebbw Vale visited Narberth with 25 wins from 25 but slipped up in their final encounter before heading up to the Premiership, losing 29-10.

Pooler have also endured tough tussles at the Lewis-Lloyd Ground and had to battle for an 18-13 win last season with Rhodri Usher’s 75th minute try proving to be the difference.

Narberth sit third in the table but with a game in hand on Tata Steel, and will relish the chance to be party poopers.

"The boys are fully aware of how big a challenge this will be," said Jones, who will aim to guide Pooler back to the Premiership when promotion returns next season.

"We had three aims this year - to win the league, to go unbeaten at home and then, if we could, to go unbeaten all season.

"But we know that we have a tough game to finish and we are going to the team that stopped Ebbw Vale from doing that.

"Narberth are a difficult team to play, it's never massively high scoring whenever we go there and they are physical and competitive, but the boys love a challenge and are excited by this.

"We've just got to do what we have done all season - work hard and play what is in front of us."

Pooler were champions-elect for most of the season but didn't allow standards to slip.

"They are an honest group and I think that we have been helped by competition for places being so fierce," said Jones, whose side beat Carmarthen Quins in the WRU National Cup before being knocked out at Premiership champs Merthyr.

"Even when we had won the league there was the motivation to keep the jersey, which has kept us going strongly.

"But it has never been easy and even though you could look at some scorelines and think that we have had plenty of convincing wins, a lot of the time we have had to battle before stretching away.

"The boys have never just rocked up expecting to win easily."

Newbridge also round off their season with a trip to Newcastle Emlyn.

After the drama of last year’s great escape, the campaign has thankfully been rather more placid for ‘Bridge.

They sit fifth in the table and will hope to finish with a success to help them remain above Bedlinog.

The Pigs have won 11 of their 21 games but slipped up 24-5 at home on Thursday against a Rhydyfelin side motivated by their battle at the bottom.

Newcastle Emlyn sit seventh in the table and were beaten 36-17 when the sides met at the Welfare Ground in October.
