NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh admits there is some doubt over the future of Byron Anthony but he insists the centre-back is very much still part of his plans.

Anthony featured in the pre-season win against a West Ham development side but hasn’t played any part in the Exiles’ competitive games so far this season.

The centre-back, who turns 30 on September 20, broke the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg in the Capital One Cup victory at Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2013.

He returned to action earlier this year but was forced to undergo a second operation to relieve the pain in his leg towards the end of last season.

Newport-born Anthony, who previously played for Cardiff City and Bristol Rovers, was a key player for his hometown club before the injury and was captain on the night he suffered the double leg break at the Amex Stadium.

He is currently suffering with a back injury and Edinburgh is hopeful that the experienced defender can return soon, but he knows there are no guarantees with such a serious injury.

“I think there is always a doubt given the severity of the injury; it was a major trauma,” said the Exiles boss.

“He’s just got to remain positive but we can’t be 100 per cent sure on him.

“Byron is struggling with his back a little bit at the moment,” he added. “He was out for so long and it takes a long time to adapt again.

“Playing the games he did in pre-season he’s just had a little setback but hopefully he won’t be too far away.”

Edinburgh praised Anthony’s attitude and resilience during the past 12 months.

“It’s been a tough time for him but he’s a top class professional and he doesn’t let it get him down,” he said.

“Hopefully it won’t be too long before he gets himself fit and training and playing again.”

Striker Rene Howe had an operation on his ruptured thigh muscle today, while Jamie Stephens and Max Porter are still sidelined but Chris Zebroski (groin) should be fit to play Cambridge United at Rodney Parade on Monday night.

“Jamie is progressing really well now and Max is in his final week at St George’s Park,” said Edinburgh.

“When he comes back on Monday morning hopefully he won’t be too far away.”
