TEN-MAN Newport County AFC frustrated hosts Shrewsbury Town to extend their unbeaten run to six games in League Two.

Andrew Hughes was sent off for a studs-up challenge on 85 minutes but County held on to earn a valuable away point at Greenhous Meadow.

That was mainly thanks to another heroic performance from goalkeeper Joe Day who made a string of superb saves.

It was also a memorable day for 16-year-old Regan Poole who made his debut in the heart of the Exiles defence and impressed with a mature display.

"I’m pleased with the performance; I thought it was a really good game and I’m certainly delighted with a second consecutive clean sheet away from home and another valuable away point," said Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh.

"I thought it would have been an injustice if we hadn’t come away with a point.

"I’m not saying we should have won it but we certainly earned our point.

"Joe Day made good saves when he was called upon but the other ten players played their part as well and we had some chances of our own."

On Hughes' straight red, Edinburgh said: "I was disappointed by the reaction of the Shrewsbury players when the tackle was made.

"There had been similar types of tackles in the game where our players didn’t react so that disappointed me.

"It made it hard for the referee and I’m not sure if it was the right decision if I’m honest.

"We’ll look at the video and decide if we feel we should appeal the decision.

"It was a well contested game but I didn’t see anything that merited that sort of reaction.

"I thought Andrew Hughes was outstanding despite his sending off.

"But special praise has to go to young Regan Poole, coming in and making his debut at 16 and I thought he was outstanding.

"He looked accomplished and showed what a future he’s got ahead of him."

Edinburgh also revealed that Poole could be set for a trial at Fulham next week and that a deal has almost been done with Peterborough United to extend Day's loan stay until the start of December.
