NEWPORT County AFC are aiming to record a first ever win over AFC Wimbledon this afternoon and former Dons midfielder Lee Minshull is hoping they can do it in style.

County have played Wimbledon six times and have yet to record a victory with three defeats and three draws between the sides so far.

And Minshull, who was a Wimbledon player between 2010 and 2012, does not hide his desire to beat his former employers this afternoon. “There aren’t too many of the players I played left at the club now – they’re all here,” said the 28-year-old, who is one of six former Dons at Rodney Parade.

“There has been a change of personnel there and we all very much want to get a result.

“Obviously we’ve had two back-to-back away draws and if we can follow that up with a win at home then they become good points.

“It’s nice to have been playing some football this year,” he added.

“We’ll look to match Wimbledon on the physical side but also keep the ball down and play on what is a good surface now.”

Minshull got his first goal of the season with what turned out to be the winner in the 3-2 home victory over Northampton Town two weeks ago and he wants more.

“It was great to get off the mark because I felt a bit unfortunate not to early on and it’s just a shame I couldn’t follow that up with more goals, particularly at Shrewsbury last week,” he said.

“I think I should have scored when I hit the post and the referee gave a foul.

“There were a few little half chances and if I can keep getting in there hopefully they can keep coming.

“Yan (Klukowski) got a goal in the week as well and if we can keep adding goals from midfield it’s a big boost for the team.”

With Mark Byrne and Adam Chapman forming a great partnership behind him in midfield, Minshull is relishing a more attacking role at home.

“Away from home there is still that defensive role as well but at home it has been really good to have that freedom to get in the box,” he said.

“We have most of the possession at home so you are going to have the opportunity to get in the box and hopefully I can put some more chances away.”
