NEWPORT County striker Chris Zebroski admits he’s still looking to ignite his season with goals, writes Michael Pearlman.

The forward is pushing for a return to the first XI for today’s visit of 2012 FA Trophy winners York City who broke Newport hearts on their first ever visit to Wembley Stadium.

County powered to seven games unbeaten in League Two before their 1-0 reverse to Oxford at the Kassam Stadium last weekend with Zebroski content with a place on the substitutes bench.

His form has been somewhat patchy this term – as with all the Newport forwards – despite scoring 13 times last season and being the Exiles’ top scorer. And now Zebroski is targeting a return to the goal trail, if selected.

“Hopefully I get back into the starting XI and get firing, I had a little injury last week was frustrating, but it’s been that sort of season really,” he said.

“We were unlucky on Saturday, we should’ve had a penalty and we shouldn’t lose heart, I expect us to attack York from the first whistle and chase the three points.

“We’ve been playing good football recently and we know we always have competition in attack, we need to play well to keep our places and it’s a constant battle.

“But the chances are coming my way, so I’m confident it’s just a matter of time before I start scoring more goals.”

Zebroski has been impressed by his first glimpses of Swansea youngster James Loveridge, the striker joining Scott Tancock on loan from the Liberty Stadium.

“He’s young and hungry and looks sharp which is exactly what you want really, hopefully he’ll bring goals to our team,” he said.

Zebroski believes County will only find themselves disappointed this term if they judge any League Two side by their place in the league table. County lost to second-bottom Oxford at the weekend but the former Plymouth striker isn’t expecting any easy games.

“We were the team in form but in this division everyone can and will be confident they can get a result and we back ourselves, especially at home.

“Last season teams didn’t want to come here because of the pitch, but now it’s because of the way we are playing, we look a real threat.”
