FORMER Newport County AFC favourite Scott Rogers could be set for a reunion with the Exiles if his new side can continue their epic FA Cup run, writes Andrew Penman.

Rogers, who was a key part of the County midfield on the way to winning the Conference South title under Dean Holdsworth in 2010, is now player-manager of Willand Rovers.

The minnows from Devon are currently ninth in the Western League Premier Division but after five victories in the FA Cup they are now just one win away from the first round proper and a potential meeting with Justin Edinburgh’s men.

Rovers have defied the odds to become the lowest-ranked team left in the competition, having beaten Radstock Town, Odd Down, Saltash United, Blackford & Langley and Aveley so far.

And now the side made up of tilers, teachers and builders will host Conference South side Gosport Borough in the fourth round qualifying on Saturday, October 25.

Rogers reached the first round with County, as well as Tiverton Town and Forest Green, so he knows what to expect.

“This is our final really,” he said. “Although we're big underdogs, it's a one-off game and Silver Street is a tight little ground.

"If it was a big open ground you'd expect them to play us off the park, but at home we can get close to them and get on their nerves.

"I've been to the first round a few times and they're great days," he added.

"I hope the boys enjoy the build-up to the game and the media and things, for them it'll be a massive thing they have not experienced before.

"I want them to enjoy every minute of their adventure."

Rogers knows that Gosport will provide his side with their toughest test yet but he’s dreaming of being in the hat for the draw a week on Monday.

“I played against Gosport twice two seasons ago when I was at Chippenham in the Southern League,” he told the Exeter Express & Echo.

“They are a very good side, but I think the tie enables us to have a one-in-five chance of winning.

“If we played them five times I think they would win four, but then there will be that odd time that we win.

“We have to hope that it will be that one-in-five game when we play them.”
