NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh expects to announce a new deal for midfielder Mark Byrne within 48 hours, but he admits he’s sweating on the future of the Exiles’ other midweek match winner.

County are within striking distance of the League Two play-offs after their 1-0 triumph on Tuesday over Southend United, Mark Byrne’s late winner completing an unlikely victory on an evening when Peterborough loanee Joe Day saved a penalty.

The 24-year old has been in sensational form since his temporary switch from London Road and Edinburgh confesses he’s hopeful rather than certain he can keep the stopper longer term.

However, Byrne, who signed an initial six-month deal at the start of the campaign is close to extending his stay.

“Joe is on loan here until the end of November and obviously we’d like to extend his stay,” said Edinburgh.

“We’re in negotiations with Joe and with Peterborough.

“Obviously with the performances he’s put in it makes things a little bit more difficult but we’ll be doing our all to conclude something sooner rather than later.

“He’s settled in well and the biggest thing is that he wants to stay.

“I certainly knew what I was bringing to the football club and he’s proved that since he’s been here.”

On Byrne, the manager added: “Talks are at an advanced stage and that should be concluded by the weekend.

“We’re delighted with that because since he’s been at the club he’s been a consistent performer at a high level.”

County’s injury crisis could also be eased by the return to fitness of Yan Klukowski, Mark Byrne, Ismail Yakubu and Scott Tancock tomorrow.

But Ryan Jackson, Adam Chapman and Danny Crow are still sidelined, alongside long-term absentees Rene Howe and Robbie Willmott.

The Exiles expect to have clearance for loan signing Curtis Obeng to start.
