ON-LOAN defender Curtis Obeng insists there is more to come from him after making his Newport County debut in the draw with Accrington Stanley, writes Jay Bayford.

The wing-back, who replaced Scott Tancock in the starting line-up in the only change from Tuesday’s victory over Southend, expressed his delight to have joined the Exiles and to be playing first-team football again.

“The manager got in touch with the club and when I found out they wanted me to come down, it was a no-brainer for me really. I was straight on the M4,” Obeng told the Argus after what was a mixed debut.

“I’m down here to get as much games as I can and as many minutes. I tried to get forward and help out at the back as much as I can. I know I’ve got a lot more to offer but I enjoyed it.

“When you’re not playing regular first-team football, you can train as much as you want and do as much gym work as you want but nothing compares to a matchday.”

Obeng’s appearance on Saturday was his first competitive appearance of the season having failed to break in to the Swansea City setp-up. The Englishman is still awaiting his Swans debut and admitted to frustrations since his move from Wrexham in 2012.

“It was a great move at the time to a Premier League club but some things don’t work out as you wish they would. It’s been a good experience and enjoyable but nothing compares to playing first-team football.”

He remained tight-lipped on his future, instead just wanting to focus on his football leaving the details to Swansea boss Garry Monk and Newport manager Justin Edinburgh, the pair having become firm friends after working alongside one another at Newport’s Dragon Park. Obeng is the third Swan to join the Exiles this term.

“I signed a contract at Swansea, I’m loyal to the club and I’ll honour the contract for as long as they want me to. The club’s been very helpful to me allowing me to go out on loan,” he explained.

“It’s out of my hands. I’m coming in, I’m going to work hard in training and give my all out on the pitch on matchday and we’ll see what the manager wants to do.”

Obeng’s debut coincided with Newport’s biggest crowd of the season since the opening day loss to Wycombe Wanderers with a total attendance of 3,254, almost 700 more than who watched Mark Byrne score the winner against Southend United last week.

Match attendance has been a big subject for Newport recently and Justin Edinburgh labelled the support on Saturday “absolutely magnificent”.
