NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh says star striker Aaron O’Connor’s three-game ban could benefit the player and the team, writes Andrew Penman.

Edinburgh is still adamant that the top scorer’s red card against Stevenage should have been overturned but he’s backed Chris Zebroski and Shaun Jeffers to shine at Luton Town today.

And the Exiles boss also believes that the rest could do O’Connor good after his injury nightmare last season.

“I was surprised that the red card wasn’t overturned,” said Edinburgh.

“I’ve been in the games since I was 16 and if that is a red card then I don’t hold out much hope for the future of the game.

“It’s going to become a non-contact sport if that is deemed to be dangerous play.

“We obviously didn’t want to lose Azza but he’s played a lot of football in a short space of time and this rest might mean we get him through to the end of the season.

“We can’t forget that he missed the whole of last season so it could be a positive that he gets a rest now and we’ve got Chris Zebroski coming back so we certainly won’t be weakening the team at all.

“This is the best squad I’ve had here and it’s an opportunity for whoever comes in because the team is flying at the moment.”

That goes for the defence as well where County will be missing Andrew Hughes for up to a year with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Edinburgh could recall youngster Regan Poole or move captain Andy Sandell to centre-back and Yan Klukowski to left wing-back.

“Regan excelled at Shrewsbury and against Swindon so I’ve got no worries about playing the boy,” he said.

“We’ve got one or two other options that we’ve looked at but whoever comes in is coming into a team brimming with confidence.

“We’ll be looking to continue the fantastic run we’re on and we’ll be backed by a big following so it should be a good atmosphere and another great game.

“The run we’re on I think every player can’t wait for the next game to come around but my job is to keep everybody’s feet on the ground and make sure we remain focused.”
