NEWPORT COUNTY AFC boss Justin Edinburgh has insisted there is no news to report despite him being the bookies favourite to take over at Gillingham.

The manager who has led Newport from the Conference relegation zone to the automatic promotion berths in League Two is the favourite to succeed former England U21 manager Peter Taylor at the League One strugglers.

However, Edinburgh, who met with the press on Wednesday, insists there is currently no news to report.

“I have had no contact, I know the club haven’t and that is as much as I can comment on it,” he said.

“It’s not the first time there has been speculation since I’ve been here and what that does show is that the team are doing very well, I take it as a compliment and everyone connected with the club should.

“I can’t answer any hypotheticals, I would speak to them if the call came, but it’s not a question that needs answering at this time.

“If a call does come, I have a lot of people to speak with.

“Portsmouth and Northampton approached the club last year and they left it up to me to decide. I had a quick chat with Pompey and didn’t speak with Northampton.

“If the call comes and I do want to speak to Gillingham I will be open and honest, but until that call comes, there is no conversation to be had.

“At the moment there is speculation and no need for anyone to panic, two and two becomes five. I am not going to take my eye off the ball here. We can’t wait for the next game.”
