NEWPORT County AFC loan signing Miles Storey is hoping to kick start his career after being dubbed 'the Marmite boy'.

Storey, who arrived on an initial one-month loan deal from League One Swindon Town yesterday, has had an eventful season.

The 21-year-old striker scored three goals in 22 appearances for Portsmouth before being informed on New Year’s Eve that the Fratton Park club wanted to cancel his season-long loan early.

He then saw potential short-term moves to Northampton Town and St Mirren break down.

The Cobblers claimed that they pulled out of a deal after being asked to pay a weekly contribution higher than the striker's actual weekly wage.

Northampton manager Chris Wilder said: “We will pay the wages of a player but we aren't being lulled into paying a loan fee for a 21-year-old.

“That's not how we do things and we move on. Miles was one of a number of targets and there is no way we are being led into paying what was effectively a loan fee for a young player.”

The St Mirren move was even closer with Storey travelling up to Paisley to train with the Scottish Premiership side for several days before that too collapsed.

Storey is hoping for better luck at Rodney Parade but he is fully aware of the fact that his style of play can divide supporters.

He told The News in Portsmouth: “It’s the Marmite effect, I get that wherever I go, there is no in-between!

“It’s the way I play, either it works or it doesn’t and it tends to divide fans of the clubs I play for.

“I try to be direct, that’s the way I play. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it does not. In my mind at least it is something different.

“But I was disappointed to leave Pompey to be honest, even though I knew the manager had decisions to make because there were too many players.

“When I have played I think I have done well, but that’s football.

“One minute you are up and the next you are down, but I have loved it at Pompey.”
